SS 422 (Stainless Steel 422) is a martensitic stainless steel alloy featuring maximum strength and hardness. It consists of about 12-14% chromium, 0.15-0.20% carbon, and trace amounts of molybdenum and nickel. Based on this composition, the alloy provides excellent resistance to corrosion in general to very mildly corrosive service conditions. The wear resistance is good and ductility average with mechanical properties having potential for high strength and hardness through suitable heat treatments. It is often applied in high strength applications such as machinery, valves, and in components of a turbine. Its strength and resistance to corrosion have a good balance.
